July 15, 2022 – The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office has completed the official Canvass of the 2022 Primary Election. Final official results were reviewed by the bipartisan appointed Canvass Board and can be viewed on the Election Night Reporting site. Final official results include additional ballots from military and overseas voters, and ballots that were counted after ID, signature, or other issues were properly resolved.

“The successful completion of the election is testament to the strength and integrity of our democratic system,” said Clerk Chuck Broerman. “Part of the process is the Risk Limiting Audit which includes a standard number of races. Recognizing the public’s interest, however, our office chose to do more. We audited additional races to demonstrate our commitment to enhancing transparency in our elections. The RLA substantiates the accuracy of our processes.”

Prior to the canvass, the Clerk’s Office also completed and passed a required post-election Risk Limiting Audit. Implemented by the Secretary of State’s Office in 2017, this sophisticated post-election forensic audit allows officials to compare a sample of paper ballots against digital tallies to verify results were tabulated correctly. Required by Section 1-7-515(2)(a) of the Colorado Revised Statutes, the RLA is coordinated by the Secretary of State’s Office and provides strong statistical evidence that the election outcome is consistent with what was counted.

Election rules for the RLA state that the Secretary of State’s Office must select a countywide and statewide race for the audit. Audited races assigned from the Secretary of State were:

  • Representative to the 118th United States Congress – District 5 – Democratic Party
  • El Paso County Clerk and Recorder – Republican Party
  • El Paso County Treasurer – Republican Party
  • El Paso County Sheriff – Republican Party
  • United States Senator – Republican Party

The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office received approval from the Secretary of State’s Office to audit additional races to further express our commitment to providing transparent, accurate and verifiable elections for the citizens of El Paso County. The Elections Division and the appointed Audit Board members audit the following additional races:

  • Commissioner District 1-Republican Party
  • Commissioner District 5-Republican Party
  • County Coroner-Republican Party
  • State Representative-District 21-Republican Party

We are proud of our office’s conduct of the canvass and Risk Limiting Audit which fortify voter’s confidence in our democratic system. Further information about the Risk Limiting Audit is available on the Colorado Secretary of State’s website.
